INTRODUCTION
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
estimates, there are 120 major rivers, and over 11,000
inland lakes (6,500 are over 10 acres) in Michigan. Though
Minnesota claims to be the “great lake state,” Michigan has
more inland lakes and borders 5 of the six Great Lakes.
Michigan has over one million registered boats which
is second behind California. There are over 1,300 public
boating access sites and over 80 harbors and marinas
throughout Michigan. The Environmental Protection
Agency estimates that small motor boats are more
polluting than automobiles, and therefore have developed
emission standards for small, recreational, motor boats.
Michigan has many, large, crystal clear, glacial lakes,
such as Torch Lake, which is seen in this lead picture.
Torch Lake is Michigan’s largest, inland lake, and one of its
deepest. With all of these crystal clear inland lakes and
many millions of tourists who come to enjoy them in the
summer; how do we mitigate the deleterious,
environmental effects of all this recreational activity?
